Backup my cPanel hosting account with FTP and FileZilla

You can make a backup of your website by downloading a copy of your website files to your computer with File Transfer Protocol (FTP). You can use any FTP client to download your site — we recommend FileZilla.

Downloading your website or your entire hosting account can take awhile, depending on the size of your site and your internet connection.

Warning: If your website uses databases (e.g. MySql or MSSQL), make sure that you also make a backup of those databases to create a full backup.

In order to connect to FileZilla, you will need to know:

Field What to enter...
Host Your domain name or IP address (Details below)
Username Your FTP username (Details below)
Password Your FTP password (Details below)
Port 21

  1. Download, install and launch FileZilla.
  2. Complete the following fields: FileZilla Quickconnect
  3. Click Quickconnect
  4. In the Remote Site area, open your website's root directory.
    Save hosting files with FileZilla
  5. In the Local Site area, open a folder on your computer where you want to store the backup.
  6. To download your website to your computer, in the Remote Site area, select all of your website's files and directories and then drag them into the Local Site area.

You now have a backup of your website's files saved locally on your computer.
